03 - The GS Office
21.11.2008 (Siem Reap)
Four days ago I rented a house for myself and as a preliminary office for the Garden Shuttle. It is nice, big and quiet and it provides plenty of space to meet, develop our ideas and coordinate the projects.
Concerning the food delivery we are still examining the situation in the villages. So far we don't know, what is produced in what quantities etc. One of these days we will go there again and continue our interviews.
The first Garden Shuttle product is about to be produced: a solar cooking box. We think, this could be a useful tool for cooking and water disinfection, because it helps saving money by using the sun instead of firewood or electricity. As a side effect it might help reducing carbon dioxide emission into in the atmosphere and thus act against the climate change. This however is at present a more or less European political topic, that does not really count in this part of the world. People need to survive and they want to improve their life. As long as they have no immediate consequences, environmental concerns are far away.
This morning I had a meeting with Mr. T who is supposed to develop the box, respectively adopt the production process to the local situation and its possibilities. Working with people here sometimes brings you close to the limit of your patience. I showed him many different kinds of boxes in the internet and Mr. T told me, the box actually seems easy to be made. But he also said, that he cannot do it, because he would need a construction plan, that he could copy or work with. I tried to convince him, that he should go and investigate on his own and find a workable solution himself, but this idea seemed to make him feel very uneasy. I start believing, that the human genome contains a copy gene, which is more prevalent here than in other places. So perhaps I am the one, who has to learn how to do things differently...
Furthermore we are about to investigate on fertilizer. Since we are about to establish reliable contacts to the farmers and try to work with them, we might also include the improvement of their production process into our business concept. So we are about to find the right products for them and in the future will also try to educate them on the correct application. Yesterday we had a very interesting meeting with A from the DED, in the course of which we obtained an interesting contact address in the Philippines.
More ideas that are to examined at the moment are the transfer of used mobile phones from Europe to Cambodia, the installation of a simple waste disposal and recycling system, or basis empirical research to gain a better understanding of the rationality in decision making in cities and rural areas.
