Building the Future

03.08.2010

It seems to me that we have opened a new chapter of the Garden Shuttle. Since July 27th Ts three kids also go to a private school, the Western International School in Siem Reap (www.western.edu.kh). They go to the public school in the morning and to the private school in the afternoon and so receive an education according to American standards and a special training in English language. Although they dont look too happy on the picture, T tells me that they enjoy it a lot to go to their new school. I hope that they still enjoy it in a couple of months and years and that they will benefit from it as much as possible.

The Garden Shuttle has not been running too well in the past years. I am sure everybody has tried to give his best but the obstacles are not easy to overcome, especially since none of us has a real business personality. So I told T that I would like to pay for a proper education of his kids until their high school exam. Then at least they will be able to get a good job for themselves and may either support their parents financially or with know how, or perhaps even help to develop the Garden Shuttle (whatever it will be by then). But for now we have to wait. Kids have their own will and we will have to see how they develop at school, if they like it and where their strengths are.

Public schools (see picture) are of course much more crowded than private schools. The are free (with the exception of little "presents" for the poorly paid teachers) but cannot provide an education according to international standards, especially not concerning the English language. English, however, is extremely important in a country like Cambodia if one wants to get into a professional career. And by the way, I will probably be able to talk to them soon.

Of course this is quite an investment. The costs for school fee, study materials, food, and bus for all three kids are a little more than 4000,- USD a year. Until their graduation this will total to quite a nice car over the years. At present I am thinking about how to lower this costs. Perhaps I could register a public charity to support education in Cambodia (working name so far: "EduCare") and let my government support me by reducing my taxes. We will see...
